Established in 2009, Equilibrant Ltd. is a growing independent, knowledge-based civil and structural engineering consultancy operating throughout Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK.

We specialise in the inspection and testing of reinforced concrete and steel structures including extensive experience using the full suite of Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods including half-cell potential surveys, cover surveys, delamination surveys, concrete resistivity testing and dust sampling for chloride/sulphate/cement analysis etc. Our unique and bespoke specialist inspection and NDT service assists clients with their asset management responsibilities. Our materials independent repair performance specifications are fully compliant with current European Standard BS EN 1504.

We also offer Civil and Structural design, Project Management, Construction Design Management Co-ordinator and Expert Witness services to the construction industry. We offer a bespoke subsidence and ground investigation service to the insurance industry including precise level monitoring and crack width monitoring.

At Equilibrant Ltd. we have the in-house capability to Project Manage on your behalf, compiling contract documents in accordance with NEC3 and overseeing the contract administration from simple to complex structural/civil design. We feel that our varied project experience, detailed knowledge of the industry and passion for service delivery ensures Equilibrant Ltd. Dr Jim Cromie

Dr. Jim Cromie

Dr Jim Cromie is the Managing Director and founder of Equilibrant Ltd. Jim is a chartered structural and civil engineer with over 25 years experience in the industry. Jim completed a PhD in reinforced concrete corrosion treatment at the University of Ulster in 1999.

Before forming Equilibrant Ltd, Jim worked for large consultancy firms where he was the lead designer for numerous structures from complex industrial developments and multi-storey car parks to domestic dwellings. As a qualified member of the Chartered Insurance Institute, Jim has extensive experience in building defect surveys, subsidence project management, claim management and remedial design and specification including underpinning.

Jim is a Practising Member of the Academy of Experts. Jim has acted as an expert witness in numerous court cases. Expert witness instructions have included structural failures, structural durability, vibration damage and foundation movement.

 

Robert Devenney

Robert Devenney

Robert Devenney is the Technical Director at Equilibrant and a chartered consulting engineer specialising in structural durability, structural and civil design and contract management.

Prior to joining Equilibrant, Robert worked for a number of large consultancies and gained extensive experience in the planning and undertaking of structural inspections, Non Destructive Testing and Materials Testing of reinforced concrete and steel structures. Robert's expert interpretation of the results has allowed him to detail repair specifications, detailed scheme designs and associated contract document compilation to NEC3. Robert has carried out site supervision as appointed supervisior under NEC3 and has been appointed Project Manager under NEC3 for asset management schemes including the repair and protection of underground/multi-storey car park structures.  

Robert represented Northern Ireland in the CIHT Colas Technical Papers Award and was invited to present to the South Wales Trunk Road Agency (SWTRA), their Framework Consultants and select members of the Welsh Government Structures Unit as a specialist in the area of Half Joint Bridge investigations and repair.

As Technical Director Robert is responsible for commercial management and technical delivery of Equilibrant's Civil Engineering business stream. Robert is responsible for identifying bid opportunities to build a pipeline for future business and has represented the company to potential clients, consultants and contractors across the island of Ireland and in the UK which has developed new client relationships resulting in numerous new commissions.
