As part of Transport NI’s A6 Randalstown to Castledawson Dualling scheme (valued at £160Mill), Equilibrant Ltd. were commissioned by Graham Farrans JV, to carry out a Special Inspection (SI) of Moyola Bridge in June 2017. The three-span precast prestressed beam and reinforced concrete deck structure was constructed circa 1990 and traverses the A6 over the Moyola River on the approach to the Castledawson Roundabout. The purpose of the Special Inspection was to undertake structural investigations, materials testing and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to inform a structural assessment of the bridge.
The scope of the Special Inspection included:
- Water-proofing Tensile Adhesion Pull-off tests;
- Coring for Compressive Strength Testing;
- Petrographic Analysis;
- Half-cell potential surveys;
- Cover surveys and Ground Penetrating Radar scans;
- Carbonation testing;
- Dust Sampling for chloride and cement analysis; and
- Backfill Material Testing
Equilibrant Ltd. arranged the excavation of carriageway trial pits, reinstatement of the bridge deck waterproofing and provision of MEWP and scaffolded access as required. The comprehensive schedule of works was completed over a weekend period with no adverse effect on traffic commuting the strategically important A6 North Western Transport Corridor. Following the inspection works Equilibrant Ltd produced a detailed factual inspection report meeting all of our clients high expectations.
